Friends of the Library

Who Are We?

The Friends of the Library is a group of passionate volunteers who strive to ensure that our Library remains a central and vital part of Powell River.  For over 20 years we have been advocating and raising funds on behalf of the Library, all the while promoting literacy, learning and public awareness.  We are a registered BC society.  You may read our Constitution by clicking here.  You may read our By-laws by clicking here.

What Do We Do?

Above all else we support the mission and vision of the Library.  We provide a direct link between the Library and its supporters, enabling them to join forces and work together.  The Friends directly support the Library through fundraising activities such as book sales and our book sale cart in the Library and we are always open to creative ideas that can support improving Library services and facilities.  Currently our main focus is to advocate and raise funds for a new Library.

What Have We Done?

The Friends have worked tirelessly over the years fundraising for the current Library and advocating for a new Library.  In the past 3 years alone, The Friends purchased over $18,000 in equipment and collections!  Here's a list of some of the things (besides books) that The Friends have purchased over the past few years:

New computers in 2009/10 (and the Library's first public computer way back in 1997
New DVD collection (2010)
Daisy readers for the visually impaired
Planter boxes at the Library entrance
Public area tables and chairs, club lounge chairs, workroom desks and chairs and public computer chairs
Carpets and cushions for kids
Book carts
