History
Our Library began in 1926 as a subscription library, The Powell River Company Library, housed in Dwight Hall. This Library was turned over to the new municipality in 1957 and operated by a Board of Directors as the Powell River Library Association. The Westview Library Association began in 1942 and by 1962 had moved its library to the current location of the Powell River Public Library on the ground floor of the MacGregor Building that also houses City Hall. In 1973 the newly-formed Powell River District Public Library Association consolidated Library service for Cranberry, Wildwood, Westview and Townsite, all of which had separate small public Library operations by that date. The Wildwood Library closed in 1980. The Cranberry Library closed in 1982 and the Townsite library followed in 1983. In 1986 when the Powell River School Board vacated its offices in the MacGregor Building, Library space increased a little. Consider then, that the Library has been occupying its present space since 1962 but with a small expansion in 1986.
