Interlibrary Loans

Use Outlook Online to request an Interlibrary Loan

Please search the Powell River Library Catalogue before you submit an Interlibrary loan request.

Your library card gives you access to the collections of most B.C. public and college libraries. Outlook Online is a province-wide catalogue listing over four million items. You can place your own interlibrary loan requests through Outlook Online. Items that you request  will be sent to us and we will contact you when they arrive.  Before you use this service, we ask you to note the following:

·                    Check our Library Catalogue first: We will only borrow books that we do not have in our collection. If we have the book you want, call or visit us to reserve it. Or you can request it yourself by using our Library Catalogue.

·                    Information: Make sure your request has accurate information. If you are not sure of the book title please discuss it with us before submitting the Outlook form.

·                    Wait time: Books take anywhere from 2 weeks to 1 month to arrive.

·                    Pick Up: Put your phone number on the request form.  We will contact you as soon as your book is available.

·                    Your availability: Please do not order books if you will be out of town or unavailable to pick them up when they arrive.  Items not picked up incur a $2.50 charge.

·                    Items not available:  Books published within the past 12 months, reference material, videos, CDs, DVDs and cassettes.

·                    Renewals: These are at the discretion of the lending library. Please ask for renewals one week before the due date.

·                    How many: Two (2) books per patron may be requested at one time.  This includes ILL loans already checked out to you.

Using Outlook Online to Request an Interlibrary Loan

If you find more than one record for the title you want, choose the one with the most Locations. This number is in brackets following Locations. Click on the title to select the record you want. The full entry for the record will display, click on the "Request This Item" button in the upper right hand corner of the screen. A new window with an interlibrary loan request form will open up. Enter your personal information in the following fields:

  • Patron Identifier: Enter your last name
  • Password: Create a password that you will use for all inter-library loan requests
  • Library Card: Enter your library card number in full.
  • Phone: Enter your phone number with area code.
"Patron Identifier", "Create a Password" and "Phone Number" are mandatory fields. If you do not include them your interlibrary loan request will not be accepted. Please contact the Library about alternate methods of notification if you do not have a telephone.  The "Need By" date is best left as "No Deadline" so the request does not expire.

When you are finished, click on the Submit button. If you choose to abandon the request close this window by clicking on the Close button or X icon in the top right hand corner.

How Do I Keep Track Of My Interlibrary Loan Request?

You can check the status of any request that you have placed yourself using Outlook Online. On the Patron Menu select ILL Request Tracking from the box on the left hand side of the screen. A box will appear. Enter the same Patron Identifier and Password that you used when you placed the request.

Click on the Submit button. A box will open with information including the status of your request at present.

If you are unsure what the status note means, ask a Library staff member.
